Dr. Lara Hiseler, C.Psych.

What lies behind you and what lies in front of you pales in comparison to what lies inside of you – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Dr. Lara HiselerI am a psychologist with 8 years of experience providing therapy and assessment services to adults in clinical/counselling and forensic psychology. I completed my undergraduate degree at Western University, a Masters degree at University of New Brunswick and Doctorate in counselling psychology at the University of Alberta. I have worked in a number of settings including student mental health centres, community agencies, corrections, and hospitals.

Many people often find themselves feeling hurt, confused, scared, ashamed, depressed, anxious, hopeless, and/or neglected in reaction to life’s challenges. Sometimes we become overwhelmed by our thoughts and feelings and are unsure how to move forward to find comfort or answers. Therapy offers you a safe relationship to better understand yourself and what you are going through.   It has always felt natural for me to extend empathy and foster a connection with those who are experiencing hardship and distress. My passion to help people help themselves thrive is an integral part of who I am. I will endeavor to create a warm and nonjudgmental environment for you to explore your hopes, dreams, fears, and challenges through individual therapy, group therapy, and/or comprehensive assessment. My goal is to stand beside you, listen to you, and empower you to live your life to its very fullest.

The life-issues that I most often help with include:

  • Relationship difficulties
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Trauma
  • Self-Esteem
  • Family challenges
  • Communication difficulties
  • Substance use
  • Loss and grief

Sometimes a more thorough, comprehensive psychological assessment is necessary to help us understand what’s going on. I use specialized tools and measures to come to meaningful and valid conclusions. This is a very personalized and specialized service which includes an easy to understand written report for your records as well as a consultation to better help you understand what to do next. This is a unique service that only a psychologist can offer. I take referrals through yourself, insurance companies, lawyers, and employee assistance programs.

Psychological assessment may be helpful for better understanding:

  • Personality and mood
  • Memory, attention, decision making difficulties
  • The impact of trauma

Specialized psycholegal assessment services are also available:

  • Psycholegal Assessment (court ordered or voluntary for criminal court matters, involving greater understanding of mental health and criminal/violent behavior)
  • Violence Risk Assessment

*Please note Dr. Hiseler does not conduct custody and access assessments related to family law matters.

I also conduct psychological research that has applied benefit to help advance psychological science and contribute towards improving psychological understanding and services. I have presented research and workshops at several national and international conferences, as well as published several papers and book chapters. I also serve on various committees for the Canadian Psychological Association, and I’m on the Board of Directors of the John Howard Society Peterborough.

I hope to hear from you and join you on your journey towards wellness and recovery.
